FCSB – FC Midtjylland
If the saying that a poor dress rehearsal leads to a great performance holds true, then we could be in for a great match in Romania this Thursday when FCM visits Bucharest. FCM delivered a terrible performance last weekend, losing to Brøndby with a crushing 5-1 at home. The only positive takeaway is that they’re unlikely to play that poorly two matches in a row. It’s crucial for Thomas Thomasberg and the team to shake off the Brøndby game, and they can do so by delivering a win against FCSB, which would essentially secure a spot in the top 24.
We believe there’s a good chance for FCM to add another three points here. FCSB, despite its impressive European history, isn’t a strong team. We saw this two years ago when they lost 5-0 twice to Silkeborg, and recently, they were dismantled 4-0 at Ibrox. If FCM can match the intensity they showed in the first 20 minutes against Union Saint-Gilloise, they should win here.
Our Europa League prediction: FCM to win, odds 2.30.
Union St. Gilloise – Roma
Roma has been struggling, and they may soon have their third coach of the season. Ivan Juric may not last much longer, as Roma suffered another defeat this weekend, losing 3-2 to Verona.
In the Europa League, there have been setbacks too, including a loss to Elfsborg. Roma needs to turn things around to stay in the race for the top 8. Union is struggling even more, as they’re languishing at the bottom of their domestic league.
Scoring and creating chances remain issues for them, as seen in their recent match against FC Midtjylland, and we don’t see that changing here. This will likely be a low-scoring match.
Our Europa League prediction: Under 2.5 goals, odds 1.75.
Galatasaray – Tottenham
Spurs are beginning to find last season’s form after wins over Manchester City and Aston Villa. The win over Manchester City came partly because Pep Guardiola didn’t line up his best lineup, but the 4-1 victory over Villa showcased the quality in Tottenham’s squad.
They’ll need that quality in Istanbul against Galatasaray, the Turkish champions, who are on track to win another title and lead their league. However, their defense has been shaky, conceding three against Elfsborg, two against Riga, and drawing 3-3 with Kasimpasa.
With Tottenham’s offense now firing, we expect a tight game with goals from both sides, with Galatasaray slightly favored due to home advantage and a full squad.
Our Europa League prediction: 1X, odds 1.50.
Olympiakos – Rangers
Last year’s Conference League champions, Olympiakos, host Rangers, both teams tied with six points after three rounds. Olympiakos’ success has been due in part to El Kaabi, who has already scored three goals in this tournament, and he will be a key player for Rangers to contain.
To succeed, Rangers need to improve their away form, having lost three of their last five road games. The recent European victory against FCSB was promising, with Vaclav Cerny scoring twice.
However, we doubt it will be enough to stop the in-form El Kaabi.
Our Europa League prediction: Olympiakos to win, odds 1.93.
Eintracht Frankfurt – Slavia Prague
Omar Marmoush is on a hot streak for Frankfurt, showing excellent form in recent games. He’s been scoring and assisting, providing a spark for the team. Frankfurt, unfortunately, is without some Danish players, as both Højlund and Nissen Kristensen are sidelined with injuries.
Slavia Prague has looked strong, though, and after being unlucky to lose to Athletic in their last match, they’ll present a challenge for Frankfurt.
Still, we think Marmoush and Ekitike will manage to secure a narrow victory for Frankfurt.
Our Europa League prediction: Frankfurt to win, odds 1.82.
TSG Hoffenheim – Lyon
Two teams outside the top 8 but still in the running for playoff spots meet on Thursday in Sinsheim. Despite Hoffenheim’s home advantage, we see Lyon as the favorite for a few reasons. Hoffenheim is struggling, recently losing 2-0 to St. Pauli, and they have ongoing internal issues and several injuries.
Lyon hasn’t been much better, but they have fewer injuries and, in our view, a stronger team overall.
Our Europa League prediction: Lyon to win, odds 2.50.
Manchester United – PAOK
Manchester is eagerly awaiting Ruben Amorim, especially after his Sporting team defeated rivals Manchester City 4-1. Until he arrives, van Nistelrooy remains in charge at Old Trafford.
United hasn’t won in Europe on home soil for over a year, and they are looking for their first Europa League victory this season after three consecutive draws. I expect them to field a strong lineup, including Bruno Fernandes, back from suspension.
Against a PAOK team that hasn’t impressed in Europe this season, United should win comfortably.
Our Europa League prediction: United to lead at halftime, odds 1.65.
Lazio – Porto
Lazio currently tops their Europa League group and has been strong in Serie A, now sitting in fifth place after three consecutive wins. Porto, however, will be a tough challenge. They’ve won seven and drawn one since a recent loss to Bodø/Glimt. Both teams would benefit from a point, so if the game is level in the second half, we don’t expect either side to push too hard for a winner.
Our Europa League prediction: Both teams to score, odds 1.65.
