Understand Asian Handicap

Asian handicap is an advanced method of betting that originally comes from Asia and is typically used in football. Asian handicap betting is a way of betting where you give one of the two teams a virtual lead over the other team. One of the advantages of Asian handicaps is that it removes the chance of a draw in the match, reducing the potential outcomes from three to two.

There are many different Asian handicaps that gives different outcomes, and, in this article, we will make sure that you have the fundamental understanding of all the different handicaps, and what they mean. Under each of the different Asian handicap explanations you will find examples to help describe the results. We have used fictional matches between Real Madrid and Barcelona to make it very simple.

Before moving on to the different levels of handicaps it is important that you understand the difference of a (+) handicap and a (-) handicap. With the (+) handicap you give the team a handicap betting advantage and with the (-) you give the team a handicap betting disadvantage.


Asian Handicap 0.0 Explained

This one is the simplest of them all. It might be confusing at first, because you don’t give any of the teams a virtual lead. With Asian Handicap 0.0 the rules are simple; If your team wins, you win the bet of if your team loses, you lose the bet. If the match ends up in draw, however, your stake is refunded. Let’s take a look at a match like that.

Example: Real Madrid Vs. Barcelona – You placed a bet on Real Madrid with a 0.0 Asian handicap

  • If Real Madrid wins, you win the bet.
  • If the match ends in a draw, your bet is refunded.
  • If Real Madrid loses, you lost the bet.

Asian 0.5 Explained

With the 0.5 Asian handicap you give one of the teams a virtual lead in the beginning of a half goal. Depending on if you want to make the team start the match with an advantage or disadvantage you can use the symbol (+) or (.) To make it perfectly clear what this means we have made a real-life example, that you can read to get the full understand of 0.5 Asian handicaps.

Example: Real Madrid Vs. Barcelona – You placed a bet on Real Madrid with a -0.5 Asian handicap

  • If Real Madrid wins, you’ve won the bet.

Asian 0.25 and 0.75 Explained

With the 0.25 and 0.75 Asian you have the opportunity to make one of the teams start with a ¼ goal handicap or are a ¾ handicap. Again the (+) and (-) symbols describes whether the virtual goal difference is an advantage or disadvantage to your team.

  • If Real Madrid wins the game, you win the bet.
  • If the game ends in a draw, you lose 50% of your bet, and the other 50% is returned to you.
  • If Barcelona wins the game, you lose the bet.

Example: Real Madrid Vs. Barcelona – You placed a bet on Barcelona to win with +0.25 Asian Handicap

  • If Barcelona wins the game, you win the bet.
  • If the game ends in a draw, you get 50% of your money back and win on the other 50%. You still made a profit.
  • If Barcelona loses the game, you lose the bet.

Example: Real Madrid Vs. Barcelona – You placed a bet on Real Madrid to win with +0.75 Asian Handicap

  • If Real Madrid wins or the game ends in a draw, you win the bet.
  • If Barcelona wins the game with only one goal difference (e.g., 2-3), you lose 50% of your bet and the other 50% is returned to you.
  • If Barcelona wins the game with two or more goals, you lose all of your bet.

Example: Real Madrid Vs. Barcelona – You placed a bet on Barcelona to win with -0.75 Asian Handicap

  • If Barcelona wins with two or more goals, you win the bet.
  • If Barcelona wins with only one goal more than the opponent, you win on half your bet and has the other half returned. This bet was profitable again.
  • If the match ends in a draw or Real Madrid wins, you lose all of your bet.

Asian -/+1

As you probably already have guessed, the match starts off with a score of 0:1 or 1:0 depending on if you choose the (-) or the (+).

  • If Real Madrid wins the game with two or more goals, you win the bet.
  • If Real Madrid wins with a goal difference of one goal, your stake is returned to you.
  • If the result of the match is a draw or a Barcelona victory, you lose the bet.

Example: Real Madrid Vs. Barcelona – You placed a bet on Barcelona to win with +1 Asian Handicap

  • In case of a draw or Barcelona victory, you have won the bet.
  • If Barcelona loses the game by only one goal, your bet is refunded.
  • If Real Madrid wins the game with two or more goals, you lose the entire bet.

The Concept Is The Same For Bigger Handicaps

The last of Asian handicaps can continue a long way to e.g., +4.5. If you already have the knowledge of what the different Asian handicaps means from 0 to 1 it is, however, very easy to understand all other handicap alternatives. Examples of other Asian handicap alternatives could be: -1.75, -2.25, +3.75, and so on.
